Lawyer — draws up and reviews an artist’s contracts. He ensures you earn and collect income from monetizing your music. He can also help you trademark your name. A lawyer usually charges either an hourly rate or a percentage of the deal (5% or so).

 An artist should hire a lawyer in the following cases:

 — If your copyright is infringed;

 — In case signing a record deal, especially with a major label;

 — In case signing a publishing deal. Publishing agreements are among the most complex, and most artists simply don’t understand what they are signing;

 — In case signing a management deal;

 — If an artist wants to get out of a record or publishing deal;

 — If a band has multiple members and key points need to be discussed and documented onshore;

 — In case trademarking your name.
